Bitop was founded in 1993 as a branch of the Faculty of Life Sciences of the private university of Witten/Herdecke (Germany). It is an international company specialising in the development and distribution of proprietary OTC products based on Ectoin®, as well as the sale of Ectoin® natural and Glycoin® natural as effective cosmetic active ingredients to global manufacturers and brands. Another field of application of bitop's unique extremolytes is their use as biostabilisers.

Its objective was the "biotechnological optimisation" ("bitop") of fermentation processes. Focusing on the production of Ectoin® in the 1990s, they are now the only producer of Ectoin® on an industrial scale in the world. They also have production capabilities for another unique extremolyte: Glycoin® natural.

The portfolio includes proprietary OTC products that successfully treat and relieve the symptoms of inflammatory skin diseases, colds, allergies, lung diseases and dry epithelium. Products in the field of supportive oncology care and animal health have recently been developed. The same applies to skin care products that treat and prevent skin damage caused by harmful substances such as fine dust.
